The variant of the new coronavirus detected in France and Japan

The variant of the virus responsible for Covid-19, which appeared in the UK and is thought to be more contagious than the original strain, has been detected for the first time in France and Japan. The United States, in turn, has imposed restrictions on travellers from the United Kingdom.

The first French case of contamination with the variant of the new coronavirus was reported in Tours, in a man "returned from London on 19 December", reports The Guardian.

"The screening carried out on the patient at the hospital on 21 December showed that he had contracted the variant of the virus, known as VOC 2020 12/01, the British daily adds. "The French Minister of Health has made it clear that he is asymptomatic and that he is currently in quarantine."

In Japan, health authorities announced late Friday that "five people from the UK tested positive for the new coronavirus variant" during screenings at two airports in the country, according to NHK.

Patients range in age from "under 10 to over 60" and four of them are asymptomatic, while the fifth suffers from fatigue, according to japan's public broadcaster.

The director general of Japan's National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Wakita Takaji, said the new strain "probably did not spread to the country because it was detected during quarantine checks at airports," NHK added.

Several cases around the world

The Independent is not as optimistic and recalls that the variant is already linked to several cases in "many countries around the world, such as Denmark, Singapore, Australia, Italy and Iceland".
