History: Ukraine wants to list Chernobyl as a Unesco World Heritage Site

History: Ukraine wants to list Chernobyl as a Unesco World Heritage Site

The remains of Chernobyl, witnesses of the nuclear disaster join the Unesco World Heritage, already attracting towers

At the beginning of December, rare snowflakes cover abandoned buildings and playgrounds in the town of Pripiat, in the Chernobyl exclusion zone in northwestern Ukraine.

To protect them from time and to encourage visitors, Kiev now wants these remains, which have become witnesses to the worst nuclear disaster in history, to join the Unesco World Heritage (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

A 30 km zone around the damaged power plant

"The Chernobyl area is already a famous attraction around the world," said Maksym Polivko, 38, a professional guide, during a visit with AFP journalists. "Unfortunately this place has no official status," he continues, hoping for a boost for "the development of tourism infrastructure."

The idea of classifying the Chernobyl exclusion zone as a Unescor was proposed by the new Minister of Culture, Oleksandre Tkatchenko, who has been in office for six months after a long career in television. "This is one of The most emblematic territories in Ukraine" and it must be "preserved for humanity," the senior official said in an interview with AFP.

If successful, Chernobyl would join the mausoleum of Taj Mahal in India, the shrine of Stonehenge in England or the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel in France.

Vast as Luxembourg, the exclusion zone surrounds within a radius of 30 kilometers the damaged power plant whose fourth reactor exploded on 26 April 1986. After trying to cover up the incident, the USSR, of which Ukraine was a member at the time, finally recognized its extent and evacuated hundreds of thousands of people. Tens of thousands of "liquidators" had also been mobilized, with rudimentary means of protection, to build a sarcophagus around the damaged reactor and try to clean up the contaminated territories. Today, the recapture of these lands by nature is more visible: roads are narrowing, devoured by wild grasses, and houses disappear under wooded areas where wild animals proliferate.

The area attracts more and more tourists in search of thrills

Last year, the worldwide success of the MINI-series of the American channel HBO

In Pripiat, a few kilometres from the plant, entry into apartment buildings is strictly discouraged due to the risk of collapse. Although authorities believe that humans will not be able to live safely for 24,000 years, the area is attracting more and more tourists in search of thrills.

Last year, the worldwide success of the HBO miniseries "Chernobyl" brought a new generation of visitors, selfie enthusiasts. Before the shutdown caused by the Covid-19pandemic, Chernobyl had reached a record 124,000 tourists in 2019, up from 72,000 the previous year. The site could even receive up to a million a year, enthuses Oleksandre Tkatchenko. Nevertheless, the Minister stresses the need to make visitors understand that this is not a "simple adventure in forbidden territory."

With the help of experts, his ministry wants to prepare travel programs to "perceive the area as a place of remembrance that must teach us things" at a time of a global environmental crisis. For Oleksandre Tkatchenko, Chernobyl's historical legacy is not just a tragedy because the disaster "forced" the Soviet authorities to "tell the truth", "triggering democratization" that resulted in the fall of the USSR in 1991. Ukraine is preparing a dossier to submit it to Unesco by the end of March and a group of the organization's experts is then expected to visit the site this summer. The final decision is expected by 2023 at the earliest.

"Before, everyone took care of the sarcophagus," the new steel cap inaugurated in 2019 on the remains of the damaged reactor, to ensure its safety for the next 100 years, says Oleksandre Tkatchenko. Now, he says, "the time has come" to do this.

UNESCO wants to examine Turkey's alterations to Hagia Sophia

The Turkish service of Deutsche Welle reported on December 2 that the Assistant Director-General of UNESCO had requested Turkey to inform internationally renowned archaeologist Mauner Buchanki of the interventions and possible changes in Hagia Sophia and Chora from Istanbul.

The United Nations cultural agency has said it wants to examine changes to the famous Hagia Sophia and Chora of Istanbul in Turkey, which were recently converted into mosques.

According to Deutsche Welle's Turkish service, Ernesto Otun Ramirez, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture, told the Turkish government that he would send the honorary special advisor to UNESCO, Mauner Buchanki, to authorize inspections of changes  brought to historic sites.

The report says Otten is concerned about rumors that the Turkish government is in the process of making changes to both monuments with reference to Christian elements.

Otten was also deeply concerned by statements made by Turkish Culture Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersui since early November that the organization "adopted Turkish views on changing the use of these two museums".

In early November, Ersui told a Turkish parliament session that “UNESCO is not concerned that it [Hagia Sohpia] has become a mosque”.

On July 10, the Turkish State Council repealed a 1934 decree recognizing Hagia Sophia as its museum.  At the end of the day, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed a decree declaring Hagia Sophia open to Muslim worship.  The local Orthodox Church, including the Russian Orthodox Church, has expressed regret over the decision, along with UNESCO.

A month after the opening of Hagia Sophia, Erdogan also converted one of Istanbul's most famous Byzantine buildings, the historic Chora Church, into a mosque.

The medieval Church of the Holy Savior, built near the walls of the ancient city of Constantinople, features 14th-century Byzantine mosaic scenes and biblical stories.

Are Dinosaurs Alive Today?

Are Dinosaurs Alive Today?

   Are Dinosaurs Alive Today?

Yes, It is a shocking news but also a fact that dinosaurs are alive today but not so large as past. The recent researches proved it that dinosaurs are present in our world today but in the form of tiny birds. Actual birds are the evolutionary species of dinosaurs.

The present scientific research tells that the birds are the group of theropods dinosaurs which originated during the Mesozoic Era ( the interval of geological time from 252 to 66 million years ago. It is also called the time of reptiles and the age of conifers ).

over 243 years ago, there existed dinosaurs in our world. Some of them were carnivore (eat meat)

carnivores

and some of them were herbivore (eat plants).

HERBIVORES

Scientists say that about 65 million years ago, a very big space rock collided with our Earth. Its impact results in the extinction of most of life on earth.

The impact of this space rock can be seen today in mexico.

The Chicxulub Crater

This resulted in the extinction of most dinosaur specie but not all. Some specie had evolved.

Human appeared about one million years ago on Earth. They had never seen dinosaurs alive.

An English geologist William Buckland firstly gave the evidence of existance of dinosaurs with the discovery of fossils of a very large animal jaws in 1819 named as dinosaur in 1824. That was a megalosaurus fossil which was carnivore (eat meat).

First discovery of Dinosaurs

In 1859, Charles Darwin in his book “ On The Origin Of Species” told us

“All living organisms are connected together. Species evolves with the passage of time and changes their traits. In the tree of life all living organisms are connected together”.

 Many scientist denied Darwin’s theory.

In 1860, the discovery of Archaeopteryx fossils surprised scientists and made Darwin true. Because it was actual a bird with dinosaur like skull and skeleton. The thing which amazed scientists was Archaeopteryx had teeth because birds do not possess teeth. Then It was confirmed that Archaeopteryx is the specie between dinosaur and birds.

Then the question aroused that from which specie dinosaurs had evolved.

After the discovery of Pterosaurs in 1784 by an Italian scientist CosimoCollini, Scientists thought that Archaeopteryx had evolved from Pterosaurs which was later denied due to pterosaurs had four digit limb while both birds and Archaeopteryx possesses three digit limb.

Thomas Huxley proposed that Archaeopteryx was evolved from Compsognathus.

  compsognathus

But there was a problem in this proposal. Both Archaeopteryx and birds had wish bone which was not present in  compsognathus. This proves that archaeopteryx is not evolved by compsognathus.

Birds have wish bone

Compsognathus do not have wish bone

Archeopteryx also have wish bone like bird

In Feb. 1969, John Ostrom published a research paper in which he discovered a dinosaur with Archaeopteryx like properties. He named it Deinonychus (means terrible claw). Deinonychus is a genus of theropods. Deinonychus had fast moving claws like hunters and birds. Both Archaeopteryx and deinonychus had similar skeleton, tail, jaws, claws and structure of bones.

Theropod had also wish bone like Archaeopteryx and birds. So theropod were declared as evolutionary parents of birds by scientists.

In 1996, a fossil of Sinosauropteryx (which is a theropod meaning Chinese Dragon Bird) was found from china. This was the first dinosaur to be found with the evidence of feather. This dinosaur had fur instead of scales on its body.

This discovery realizes that dinosaurs evolved into the birds.
