iOS flaw made it possible to take control of an iPhone over Wi-Fi
Fortunately, this security flaw has been fixed by Apple since the iOS 13.1.1 update rolled out in January 2020
Thanks to a flaw that was present in iPhones, a security researcher has proven that it is possible to take control of any device running on iOS, iPad or iPhone. Ian Beer, who works for Google Project Zero, posted a video on YouTube showing how his attack was carried out, reports specialist media 01net.
To develop this attack, the security expert went through a flaw found in 2019 in Apple's peer-to-peer network technology called AWDL (Apple Wireless Direct Link). This is the system for, among other things, users of iOS devices to exchange files with each other through Airdrop.
A flaw repaired by Apple
Once inside this security hole, Ian Beer managed to insert malicious code into the device he was targeting without any intervention from the owner of that iPhone. Worse, the security specialist managed to transmit this malicious code to about 20 other nearby devices within seconds, as can be seen in the YouTube video he uploaded.
By taking control of these devices, he was able to crash them all very quickly. If Ian Beer disclosed this attack publicly, it is because this security flaw has been fixed by Apple since January 2020 with the iOS 13.1.1 update.
