WhatsApp criticizes Apple for not applying new transparency rules to its own apps

WhatsApp has come up against future Rules of the App Store. In an effort to strengthen privacy and transparency of the proposed applications, Apple will introduce new rules for developers regarding the use of data.

Starting with version 14.3 of iOS, all apps will need to tell users what personal data is being collected and for what use. For each application, a listing listing how data is managed will be displayed, reports 01net.

Apple apps exempt?

Developers will have to fill out three tables: one on the type of data collected to track the user on other platforms, a second on the data recorded by the application and a third on the information used and analyzed anonymously. For WhatsApp, this new rule is unfair.

Facebook-owned messaging accuses Apple of not submitting its own apps to the new system. The Apple brand responded that all apps, including its own, will have to provide this new information. The case remains with pre-installed applications such as iMessage. According to Apple, users will find the same information on a "privacy" page on its website.

A distorted idea of the data collected

WhatsApp also criticizes the vocabulary chosen by Apple to account for the data collected by the apps. To streamline its listing, Apple would have chosen overly broad terms such as "financial data" according to WhatsApp, which provides a payment service in some countries.

The inability to provide details of this collection is considered problematic by the Facebooksubsidiary. This could give users misconceptions and make them suspicious. The new transparency policy is expected to be put in place on Monday. All the requested information is available on Apple's developer website.
