Turning his back on Donald Trump's “America first”, President-elect Joe Biden promises, as shown by the first appointments of his future government, a return to a more moralizing and interventionist foreign policy, harsher towards China, closer to Europe.
On November 24, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the diplomat chosen by Joe Biden to fill the post of US ambassador to the United Nations, pledged to take a new approach to what is one of the essential missions of foreign policy.
According to her, in her thirty-five year career, she would often have had the habit of sharing her knowledge of Cajun cuisine, a way for her “to abolish borders, to establish links with people, in order to get to know each other better on a human level ”
Obama's third term
While this speech may seem modest, the same cannot be said of Joe Biden's foreign policy ambitions. When he made public the list of six candidates he had nominated for his national security council, the president-elect assured that he intended to revive traditional alliances and re-establish what he described as “the position of moral leader. [and]… planetary ”of America.
Sources close to the diplomatic world see Joe Biden's intentions as a rejection of the isolationism advocated by Donald Trump's “America First” policy - which had strained traditional alliances, in particular in Europe - and the will to return to the status quo of the presidency of Barack Obama.
"This is Obama's third term," commented a senior Republican parliamentary aide who argues that the 44th president had "undermined American domination" and predicts that Biden's team risks arousing hostility from countries with whom Trump has forged stronger ties, including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Poland and Hungary.
