2020 on it's Worst | Google, YouTube Crash in Last Month of 2020
Google, YouTube Crash in Last Month of 2020 and the Internet is Convinced It's Season Finale
Google services fell for about an hour on Monday in a massive outage that prevented many people from watching YouTube videos, accessing their Google Docs, or sending emails in Gmail. The outage also made Google Classroom temporarily unavailable, preventing many students who were learning remotely from being able to access their classes. A little after 8 a.m. ET, most of Google's services were back online, but Gmail remains down for many.
It's official: 2020 has been the most unexpected year on record. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. And in December, when everyone finally thought that the year had served us well enough, the most unexpected accident occurred: Google and YouTube (also owned by Google) collapsed.
For those who are not that well informed about internet website failures, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram fail every few months is not out of the ordinary, but YouTube and Google almost never fail. Top application server downtimes are quite common and can occur due to a myriad of reasons.
The most common include scheduled maintenance, minor system errors that interrupt the delay of information from remote servers, etc. In extreme or rare cases, such an outage can also represent coordinated cyberattacks, such as the cryptocurrency attack on Twitter that saw the accounts of many public figures being hacked. Given the current cybersecurity climate, such a prospect cannot be ruled out either. However, the exact reason and overall duration of downtime for Google services in India remains to be seen.
This coincides with reports on website and server outage tracker Downdetector, which also states that there is a clear spike in the number of reports on a possible server outage for Google India, from around 5PM IST. Google is yet to confirm any server outage, or publish information regarding why its services may not be working right now.
Flash News could independently verify that the YouTube Android app appears to be currently down, with a 'failed to connect to server' message displayed when the app was opened. The service is down for iOS as well, though YouTube still appears to be running on desktop browsers at the time of posting the story. However, currently Google Drive is not accessible in desktop browsers, as well as in iOS and Android mobile applications. As a result, certain Google services are likely still running for some users intermittently, although a server outage for Google India is quite evident at this point.
Google on this matter
The company's workspace status dashboard had been red across the board, with every single Google service indicating an outage. Later Monday morning, they turned green, indicating that they're operating normally.
"We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and continued support," Google said in a statement.
Google said it will work toward restoring its apps for the remaining people who are still unable to access them, but the problems should largely be resolved. "Please rest assured that system reliability is a top priority at Google, and we are making continuous improvements to make our systems better," the company said.
