Pakistan ranked as “most improved country” in Nuclear security index by NTI
United states based Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) has ranked Pakistan as “the most improved country” for nuclear security measures in its Nuclear Security Index 2020 after increasing its overall score by seven points.
On the whole, Pakistan ranked 19 with 47 points, while India ranked one place below at 20th spot with 41 points.
According to the NTI Nuclear Security Index report for 2020 the major improvements were in Security and Control Measures which increased 25 points mainly due to newly implemented regulations and strengthened laws in the country.
An improvement was also witnessed in the Global Norms category, in which the ranking improved by one point.
Pakistan is ranked at 33rd place in the latest rankings with an overall of 58. Pakistan has steadily improved in the Security and Control Measures category with the passage of new regulations, improving by:
- In 2014, +8
- In 2016, +2
- In 2018, +6
Pakistan’s scores for Theft: Secure Materials in different categories are:
- Security and control measures – 57
- Global norms – 45
- Quantities and sites – 19
- Risk environment – 16
- Domestic commitment and capacity – 89
Former Ambassador of United States Laura Kennedy said,
“One welcome bit of news reported by #NTI index is that #Pakistan ranked as most improved in security of those countries holding nuclear materials”.
Pakistan’s Ambassador(Asad Majeed) to the United States said:
“We welcome that NTI categorizes Pakistan as the most improved country for Nuclear security measures in its Nuclear Security Index 2020. Pakistan’s improvement is also the second largest ever by a country since NTI Index was launched in 2012”.
